Story
News 3

I have lots of news from this summer:

I finished last year's Level 2 Accountancy course and found out that I passed with distinction! 🎉 I'm excited to enrol on my Level 3 this week and start with the more detailed accounting work.

I did some work experience with an accountancy firm. I worked on computerised accounts, learned about allowable tax expenses and pay as you earn, and did some research projects on topics like GDPR and money laundering. I really enjoyed it and can see myself working in a firm like that once I've finished my studies.

Whilst studying this year I hope to find a job as an accounts assistant to get even more experience.

I'm also moving out of the hostel and am very excited to finally have my own space. The best part will be being able to cook for myself again, as the YMCA barely has any kitchen facilities.

I'll let you know how I get on with my first exams in October - wish me luck!

The new laptop for my accountancy course!

I received a text the night my campaign had fully funded. I had just finished my college evening class and I was having tea with a few friends in my room. I told them and they couldn’t believe it - they didn’t think it would fund that fast! It only took 9 days to fund.

I raised £2,320 from 145 supporters - it’s insane. That has funded a laptop, the accounting software and the accountancy course.

Someone donated over £1000 pounds - that was amazing. I’m overwhelmed that a stranger can do that. I am going to do the best that I can for level three, knowing there is someone behind me, backing me to succeed.

There are people in my hostel that ask me questions about Beam. I tell them to talk to their support worker or email Seb directly to start so we can get more people involved. It’s about them trying to better in the situation that they are in. A lot of them have a block at accountancy level 2 because it is free. If they want to move on to level 3 it’s a shock because you have to pay for it and it makes it a lot harder.

I start level 3 September. It’s taking it up a notch and progressing it to the next level. I’m not nervous - I got 83% in my last exam and I am awaiting the results from the Using Accounting Software module.

It will still be an evening course. We have a WhatsApp group with all of the people in the class. We all help each other with the work, we call each other up and explain it. It’s really interactive. I count a lot of these people as my friends now - the social side is just as important and we are going to go for drinks when we finish in June!

I have only got one more exam before I finish. Then I want to think about working in accounting because you need experience as well - my aim is to secure work experience while doing my level 3 course.

I have been playing the playstation when I’m not revising - especially during the Easter break!

I have been surprised how quick the Beam process has been. My support worker was very keen for me to start Beam and it has helped me move forward in what I want to do and it’s another step to moving on from my hostel.

I’d really like to thank everyone who funded my campaign. I am very grateful that strangers have reached out to help me. I would love to help others through Beam in a similar situation to me.

My future looks much more positive. I will be able to use accounting software at home which will help me practice. It just makes me more and more able to do what I want to do. Hopefully in 5 years time I will be working in accounting and in my own place!

I have just set my campaign live!

I have just set my campaign live. It's very exciting to see new possibilities. I have an exam tomorrow in using accounting software as part of my Level 2. I'm the only one taking it because I am taking it early and I am very confident in these skills - I'll let you know how it goes! Thank you for reading my story.
