Having somebody there to talk to and to support you - it can change your whole perspective. I’ve had hard times and not known who I could turn to. That's why I want to find a job in social work. I'd like to help others in the same position.
I moved to the UK after an awful event made it unsafe for me to stay in Jamaica. I stayed with relatives at first but after my daughter was born there was not enough room. Without the right residence permit, I wasn't allowed to work or claim housing benefit. So I was moved to a hostel when my baby was just 8 months old. This was very difficult. It was not a suitable place to live with a child.
It was a relief to have my residency granted last year and to move into a flat. I'm determined to be independent again. I've started work in a supermarket but my ambitions are bigger. I will never stop seeking ways to better myself and help my daughter. This course will let me become a family support worker. I want to learn and get as much experience as possible. In the future, I can continue studying to reach my goal of becoming an independent social worker. To give something back is really important to me. I want to share my success with others.
