I moved to the UK nearly 20 years ago. I wanted a better life for myself and my family. Unfortunately, my time here has been a struggle. I was only on a rolling temporary visa, which meant I could not work. Without work, it's been tough to support myself.
I've relied on the kindness of family and friends but after a while this way of life becomes difficult. You never feel settled, can not progress and are not able to build for the future. I've never wanted an extravagant life. I just want my own independence. A place to call my own and a chance to build a life.
Thankfully, I've just been granted my permanent visa. After nearly 20 years, I am finally ready to start my journey. At this time my heart is only filled with hope and joy. I do not regret the past, I just want to make the most of this opportunity and work towards a happy future.
I've always cared for others. I've raised my family's children and supported those in the local community during my time in the UK. I want to continue this and make it a career. I feel like I've always been a support worker.
