I already have a fair bit of experience with this kind of hands-on work. I did all sorts over the years - painting, roofing, plumbing. Through it all, I kept saying that I wanted to train to become an electrician. I had friends who did this and they loved their jobs. But I was always held back by my addiction.
I had problems with drink and drugs since I was a teenager. Despite this, I kept working for many years. Then I left my job to care for my Dad and later for my baby son. After my Dad's death, things got bad for a time and I was using more heavily. My life improved dramatically when I entered treatment with Kairos last October. I think it's so different from other rehabs because there’s a lot of trust and responsibility placed in your hands. It’s down to you if you really want recovery - and I did.
Now drug free, I've been able to really take a look at my life. When Beam came to talk at Kairos, I knew this was the right time to go after my goals. When I was at school I never really felt ready to sit down and study. I'm actually really excited to go back to college and get learning. They say your school days are the best days right?
