I love being around people and enjoy helping young people realise their potential. Work for me is a source of pride. Something that will give me financial and professional stability as well as a brighter future. It will let me look after my children and hopefully set an example for them that you can work hard and reap the benefits of your achievements.
Five years ago I was living in one room with my two children. As my children were growing the space became increasingly overcrowded. I started looking for affordable new places to live, but during that time the landlord evicted us. I was lucky to have a helping hand from one of my friends, so I lived in their home with my children until the council were able to help me. We were provided with a B&B to live in before being moved to various other temporary accommodations. Being a homeless single mum isn't easy. It's even more difficult when you're trying your best to to build a career but are only being offered zero hour contracts. Low hours and low pay don't make ends meet.
I've been teaching young children and teenagers Arabic and Islamic studies in my local mosque for more than 10 years. This experience made me realise how much I love teaching. It's given me the confidence to take this next step and work towards building my career in teaching. I believe I have the skills to do well and I'm really looking forward to learning new skills and working in a school environment.
If there was a piece of advice I would give to someone going through a similar situation it would be don't lose your hope. You are still alive, and that's not a mistake. So always think positively, be patient and pray. I thank God that I was able to have the help of friends and loved ones before being given a more stable home. I'm excited to do this training and look for secure work that has the potential for progression.
