In a few years' time, I hope to be renting a small apartment for myself and working as a carer or support worker. I'll probably have a piano and a small car to get around in.
Right now I'm at risk of eviction due to the lockdown. I moved to the UK at the end of last year, but I wasn’t able to work enough before the lockdown started to qualify for benefits. It's meant that I don't have enough for rent, bills, food - anything. This is why I really want to get a job. It's been a very worrying time - without a job, I've felt at serious risk and unsure about what's going to happen.
Things started to improve with the end of the lockdown coming into sight, and when I started receiving support from Beam. I feel much more hopeful now. It’s not been easy being alone the past months, particularly as I'm so used to working and not sitting around at home all day. Before I arrived in the UK, I had always worked. For most of my life I was a primary school teacher overseas and more recently I worked as a carer for over three years. Since getting here it's been tough to sort out a new job. I'm so glad I'm moving forward with this now so I can support myself and others.
I want to get a job taking care of vulnerable people. I really enjoy this kind of work - it's so rewarding to show someone that they're not alone and that they have someone who is there for them. That's what I like best about it, and I can't wait to get started.
