What's my main goal now? To better myself and to grow. I want to do this line of work so I can help others going through the same journey that I have.
I became homeless more than five years ago due to my addiction. I had problems with alcohol since I was young. It got to the stage where it was hard to hold down a job or to stay with my family. I knew things were really bad and reached out for help. It took some time but eventually I got a place in a rehab. That was back in 2017 and I've kept moving forward ever since.
The support workers who've helped me during this time have been amazing. They bring their own experiences to the table and know what they are talking about. I know that to experience recovery as a client and as a support worker is completely different. That's why doing this training is so important. I want to be ready to give something back and help others come through the other side of addiction.
I've already made the first steps - enrolled on my college course, signed up to the library and found a voluntary placement. It's definitely bringing back some memories from my time at school! But things have changed a lot now. Recovery has made such a massive difference to my life. I've learnt about myself and have a close relationship with my family and my daughter. The dream is to take her on holiday once I'm back in work. Now I'm just excited to get started.
