I like helping people who can’t do things for themselves anymore. Seeing them happy makes me feel good about myself and the world.
My children and I were evicted from our private accommodation back in 2012 as we couldn’t afford the rent. We spent time living in different friends' houses, a few months in a hostel where we shared one room between us. Since 2015 we’ve been in temporary accommodation. It has been a difficult experience, but thank god I have managed to get through it. I think to myself sometimes ‘If I didn’t go crazy when I was on the floor squatting with different friends, why would I now?’ I’m grateful that I’ve had the strength to get through this, and I’m ready for the next step.
I really need a job, mainly because after I’ve paid all the bills - the electricity, gas, water, and of course everything I need to buy for the children - I have almost nothing left. I’m a single mother, so there’s no one else but me to look after my family. I want to be able to do better, and that means being more financially independent.
I’ve already got several years of experience as a carer. I had to stop working back in 2017 when I was pregnant with my twins. Now that they're old enough to go to nursery, I’m ready to get back to work, and Beam are going to support me to find a job and get started. I really enjoy looking after elderly people. When I work with them, I remember my father and mother who are themselves getting old, and who I haven't been able to see for 12 years. I want to be able to support the people I work with to be independent and happy.
In the future, it is my intention to go back to school and study nursing. This is my long term plan, and getting a job right now as a carer will support me moving forward in gaining the skills and experience to be able to do it. I’m excited to get started!
