When I was a lorry driver in Romania I loved traveling to different parts of the country and knowing the roads like the back of my hand. I like the independence of being on the open road and the responsibility of delivering things people need. I was attracted to lorry driving in the first place because it's a solid career and the most important thing to me is being able to support my family.
I came to the UK as I wanted to give my wife and children a better life. It was very hard when I first arrived as my driving qualifications weren’t recognised and I didn’t have enough money to do more training. My English wasn’t as good as it is now and I struggled to find a job. Eventually, I found myself sofa surfing and then living in a temporary hostel. It wasn’t how I had imagined my life here at all.
Work has always been important to me so I made an effort to make some connections and started to work part time as a street cleaner. Although my goal was to return to lorry driving, I was grateful that I finally had a small income and got some confidence back. When the staff in my hostel told me about Beam I couldn’t believe it. I now have something to be excited about!
I want my kids to be proud of me and to give them the best start possible. The missing piece of my puzzle has always been the extra training I need so this opportunity will make things complete. I can’t wait to get back on the road again!
