Working in a decent job, towards a career I really love doing, is what I’m now working towards. This year, I took a big step by achieving my Level 2 electrical diploma and it’s really important I keep going and become fully qualified.
The Level 2 courses are free, so I have my plumbing and electrical diploma, but I haven’t been able to afford the Level 3 - until now. I’m just really looking forward to going back to college in September and continuing with my studies to complete a higher level course.
In 2004, I first became homeless. I was smoking cannabis and was kicked out of my mother’s home. Things became a lot better for me when I started attending Baron’s Court Project. The people there helped me get back on my feet. They supported me with meals, housing advice and friendship - and they were the ones who referred me to Beam.
Why do I want to work as an electrician? I really like construction as a whole. My family all have careers in the trades, working as carpenters and plumbers. It’s practical and I like working with my hands. Over the summer, I’ve been working as a labourer but it’s hard, physical work that I won’t be able to do forever, so I want to get a more skilled job that pays more as well. My Dad is really proud of me for continuing my education and I promise I won’t let you down either.
