I came to the UK in 2019 for a job interview and stayed in a hostel whilst I was here. As the weeks went on, I found myself running out of money and I eventually became homeless. After that I had to stay on the streets for 3 months until I found a hostel that helped homeless people. Since then I’ve jumped from place to place, and to tell you the truth, it’s exhausting! Luckily, St. Mungo’s found me a few weeks ago and helped me into temporary accommodation. I have no access to public funds so I’m currently relying on them for everything, down to my food and travel.
It’s funny because i’m Hungarian and I can also fluently speak Russian, Polish, Czech and French! But even with these languages under my belt, I’m still starting from scratch because English is new to me. I know enough to get by and hold a conversation, but sometimes I get frustrated at myself for not knowing enough words. I’m doing a course right now which is helping – I won’t give up until I’ve mastered it too!
When I lived in Paris, I worked at the Hilton Hotel as a housekeeper and I’ve also worked in other amazing cities like Budapest and Amsterdam. There’s something fun and upbeat about hospitality so I’d like to stick to that.
I’m overwhelmed at the thought of people I've never met wanting to help me. I won't lie to you, I’m still waiting for my Beam caseworker to tell me this is all a prank! Working with Beam has given me hope that I can get through this, I just have to keep trying. I’m a simple man so if I get a job and somewhere to call home, I’d honestly be happy!
