I'm a telecoms engineer by trade and have over ten years worth of experience in that sector. I’m also a single parent at the moment so juggling both the process of seeking asylum and supporting my children through the pandemic has been an incredibly tough journey. My partner is hoping to join us here but whilst she waits to be granted the correct papers to enter the UK, it’s just me bringing up my 5 children. Focusing on work has been a priority too but it’s been near impossible with everything else going on!
When I first arrived in the UK in 2018 I was put in temporary housing whilst going through the asylum process. My children were then allowed to join me and we’re now being supported by the council in another temporary place. I’ve been applying to lots of different roles but due to childcare I’ve been quite restricted. However, I recently decided to just go for it and accept a job I had been offered. I know that if I can make the childcare work, it will seriously improve our financial situation. Beam are helping me to pay for some of this childcare upfront until I’m able to sustainably do it myself.
Having a stable job will mean that I’m able to give my family what they need. I’ve got the skills but I just need the opportunity to use them. Getting support with childcare and a few other things like travel and new work clothes will be a huge boost as I start this journey.
