One of my biggest achievements so far has been learning English. When I came to the UK two years ago I could only say a few things. I was always determined to learn as I know that communication is key to lots of things, including employment. I taught myself through youtube videos, films and free classes through church. I still have a way to go but I'm proud of my progress.
I came to this country as an asylum seeker. I was living in accommodation provided by the Home Office to begin with but once I got my papers I had to find somewhere new to live. The problems started at that point. I struggled to find a landlord who would accept a tenant on benefits and my level of English was also a barrier. Fronting the deposit and first months rent was also an issue. I ended up having to sleep rough over the winter. It was extremely tough. I was lucky to be found by Thames Reach who helped me into a hostel.
I think security work would suit me really well. I'm so ready to get out there and start earning a wage that can support me. I'm also looking forward to all the other things that come with a job like meeting new people, making friends and learning new things.
Once I've found stable work, I'll be in a place to focus on other parts of my life like moving into somewhere of my own. My dream is to study at degree level one day so I'd love to start putting some money aside for that when I can.
