What makes me smile? A new day. That I am able to wake up, learn something new, move forward with my life. Now there are so many people that I can rely upon and look up to. My relationship with my family is the best that it’s ever been. Recovery gave me these things. So when the chance for training came up I thought, this is my time now.
I became homeless two years ago after losing my job, my savings and my home. All because of my addiction. It took over my life. I remember ending up at hospital for the fourth time, scared about whether I would live another day. I packed my bags and went into a detox centre at the hospital. This was the beginning of my journey. With the support of my family and of Phoenix Futures, I am now 17 months sober.
It was a friend who first recommended that I try out some beauty training. I used to do some massages and nails for others and I really enjoyed it. So I found a course where I could learn some professional skills. And now I love it even more! My teachers were very happy with me and I was really proud of myself.
Those courses have made me absolutely convinced that beauty is what I want to work in. With help from Beam, I can get the full Level 2 Diploma and take my Level 3 as well. The beauty industry is so huge right now. There are new opportunities coming up all the time. I'm so excited to take advantage of it all.
