When I moved to London, I completed my Master’s degree and I was working really hard to support myself with a proper job. Unfortunately, I was in a very abusive relationship from a young age. Eventually, it was not only emotional but also sexual and domestic abuse, which escalated after 13 years. My ex-partner was finally forced to move out when I contacted my doctor and I went to the police. As much as I was relieved that he was gone, my anxiety, chronic stress, PTSD and depression would not go away. He kept stalking me and things were going downhill. I didn’t have time to heal because I was diagnosed with acute respiratory Covid infection. I went through 6 months of treatment. But this meant that I fell into debt as I wasn’t able to work.
After Covid, I felt incapable of doing any basic task. Unfortunately, shortly afterwards my landlord issued a notice after 8 years at this property. Instead of being able to focus on my health I had to look for a new flat which was an impossible task due to my serious health problems, unemployment, benefits and the current crisis of the rental market in London. Despite that, my landlord kept pushing me out and sent emails threatening eviction.
When I was referred to Beam I was shocked that there are people out there who understand my situation without knowing me. My first Beam case worker, Alex, was patient and understanding. She took her time to register my case. I felt like I was speaking with someone who understood what I was going through. I am also so grateful for the support and guidance I have received from the housing operation executive Angelica. She was dedicated, informative and professional. I could not have done it by myself. Thanks to Beam I didn’t feel lonely and my faith was restored.
Once I am able to settle in my new home I will be able to focus on my health and become creative again. By trade, I am a passionate designer and artist but I had not been able to create in a long time. After my recovery, I would like to go back to work and take part in charity art exhibitions and auctions to help give back and to raise funds for other people who are in need, especially survivors of domestic abuse. If it hadn’t been for charitable organisations, I would have ended up on the street.
