I love working directly with people and assuring them that they are in good hands. I know that working as a dental nurse will involve a lot of people skills so that’s one thing I can say I’ve already got!
I came over to the UK from Nigeria so that myself and my daughter could have a better life. When we first arrived, I didn’t know anybody and my immigration status meant that I didn’t have the right to work. I relied on handouts from the small community that I became a part of. For a long time we were sofa surfing with people that were kind enough to let us stay and occasionally we even stayed at the mosque. Being homeless is exhausting and can make you feel worthless. As my daughter grew, things became more desperate.
Last year things started to change when I was introduced to a charity called Praxis. They helped us to move into council owned temporary accommodation for people with no recourse to public funds. We were also supported to apply for documents that would give me the right to work here. Finally getting these documents last November was a huge turning point for me.
I want to be a good role model to my daughter and other single parents out there. I haven’t studied in a long time but as I’ve been waiting for an opportunity like this for so long. I know that all the motivation is there! In a few years time I’d love to have a stable job as a dental nurse and show my daughter that life doesn’t have to be as complicated as it has been.
