I have a degree in Creative Writing, so I was excited to write my story for you. Here it is:
A few years ago, I left my parents’ home due to arguments. We didn’t get along anymore. I went to various friends’ houses sofa surfing. It became very awkward after a while and I could see my friends’ parents didn’t want me there anymore. I eventually left and I stayed at my nan’s for a while. But I left there too - I didn’t want my nan to see me the way I was.
I had nowhere to go, so I ended up in my local park. It was hell. I suffer from Anxiety and Panic Attacks so being in a park at night was awful. Every night felt like surviving a horror film.
When I was at the park, I befriended a man called “Alan” who was homeless as well. He was in his mid 40s and he had been homeless for over 10 years. He really helped me keep hope that something good would happen. At the time I was feeling like I had no hope, but he was great. He eventually left, but before he did he gave me a hug and told me to keep fighting. I really hope to see him again one day.
Eventually, I got in touch with my local council. At times it was difficult, and I felt like there was no hope. At times I felt suicidal. Finally the council found me a hostel to stay in. This is where I’m currently at now.
The most important thing at the moment is getting some stable to live. Then, I want to get into a stable job. I really want to be in a position where I’m helping individuals find their ways in life. From first hand experience, I know it can be very daunting when you’re at the bottom and you feel like society has given up on you. I would love to help people in similar situations and give them that belief that Alan gave me in the park. To keep fighting through all this.
In two years’ time, I want to be living in my own place - maybe with a cute little dog. I want to be mentally in a positive place. And I would love to be in a stable job - something I that inspires me and drives me. I want her my sister to be proud of me, more than anything - she’s my inspiration. (I also want Liverpool to be champions of England.)
I’m very excited about working with Beam to get into stable housing. I would admit I am a little nervous, I’ve never done anything like this before, but I can’t wait to see what happens next. Beam have been absolutely amazing and I am forever grateful. They are a group of amazing individuals who are making a change for the best. They all should be knighted by the Queen for the services to the British public!
