My husband and I came from Ethiopia to the UK as refugees. My husband was violent and I left him and went to a women's refuge. I stayed there for 7 months before being placed in temporary accommodation by the Council. I’m currently waiting for a place on the council housing list. I’ve been benefit capped for two years now, so my housing and job situation feels very precarious.
I’ve been trying to juggle being a single mother to my three young boys alongside trying to find a part-time job, and it’s tricky! I started a job as a kitchen assistant in March last year and worked for two days, but then we went into lockdown and I haven't worked since. I’ve tried looking for other roles, but the shifts just don’t work around my childcare commitments.
I’m really excited to start work as a carer with Beam’s support. My long term ambition is to become a nurse, so this feels like a step in the right direction! I can’t wait to get back into work and be independent again.
