I absolutely adore kids of all ages. They are really interesting and unique people and I’m always happiest when I’m around them. This is why I’m going to study to become a teaching assistant!
At the moment I’m at risk of losing our home because I’m not able to pay full rent. This is due to my benefits being limited, and as a result I’m in arrears with my landlord. My previous work contract was at a supermarket but it ended right at the beginning of lockdown. Since then, I’ve struggled to find any work that would support us.
It's really affected me knowing that I'm in situation that could lead to me and my children becoming homeless. At times it’s brought me to a low place. However, things really began improving when I started talking to Sam from Beam and he showed me all the things I could do and how they would benefit me, my children and my housing situation. Since we began working together I have been thinking more positively which has made my mood and attitude a whole lot better. It’s just made me feel like this is the kind of support I’ve needed for a while and since then I’ve been really excited to see what my outcomes will be in the future.
My plan is to get into work as a support worker first, where I can help those that need support and make a difference to their lives. I’ve been volunteering two nights a week at a local youth centre for four years now, so think I’ll be good at this. I also know how valuable it can be to have someone on your side in difficult times. While I'm working, I’ll also be studying for my teaching assistant qualifications, and I'll look for work in the teaching sector after I’ve achieved them.
Shazmina is working with Beam because she's at risk of homelessness.
