I moved from Iraq to the UK in September 2021 with my two little girls. The language and tech barrier has meant that finding work has been difficult. It’s strange for me - ever since I was young I've been very independent and happy doing my own thing. But nowadays, I have to ask people how to do the smallest tasks and it's really affected my self-confidence.
Being a single mum is a very big challenge. When you think about having a child, you don't ever think you'd look after them alone. As hard as it is, it’s given me an enormous amount of strength and resilience. Being able to get through all this by myself - I can get through anything!
I taught in a secondary school in Iraq before I moved to the UK. I've done a lot of voluntary work in between too, and I have an NVQ in childcare. My long-term ambition is to become a teaching assistant.
Right now, I’m looking to find work as a carer so that I can use my skills and qualities to support the most vulnerable people and build my experience. I want to be happy and confident. I want to keep moving forward, improve myself, do different courses and always, always keep growing.
