Driving is a very social job and I really enjoy meeting different people. I also like the independence that it offers - you just get on with it. My step father, who is a driver as well, first got me into the job many years ago.
I later started a career in construction, but I had to stop working on site. I developed back problems and arthritis and could not continue with a physically demanding job like that. Since I left work, it's been difficult. I have been living on a very tight budget. I've also been limited in terms of the things that I can do and have been stuck indoors most of the time.
So, I am really excited now about getting my private hire driver licence again with Beam's support and return to a job in driving. A job that I did before, know I can do well and that works for me with my health conditions. Once I'm in work, I can finally start having a life again and not just surviving. I can start paying off my debts. It'd also be nice to be sociable and build up my self-confidence again by getting out and interacting with my customers. But my main motivation to get back into work is that I want to be a good role model for my two boys. Everything I do is for them. I want to teach them a good work ethic, so they should see me work and support them.
I am looking forward to the new year and the opportunities that it brings. I am keen to get into work again as soon as possible! I then want to spend more quality time with my children and would love to take them on a holiday.
Troy is working with Beam because he is at risk of homelessness.
