My dad was a carpenter all his life and I got the bug for working in construction from him. I've now decided I want to become an electrician, after my friend recommended it. I am particularly interested in moving into renewable energy. I can’t wait to get to college and learn a skill, which will help me improve my life and regain my independence.
I first became homeless in 2015. I lived life a little recklessly at the time and was using drugs. Homelessness is not a nice experience, and once you’re there it's hard to get back to normal life. You’re cold, you’re hungry and your spirit is low. It was exciting when Homefinder gave me my big break by helping me find somewhere to live. I am now staying with a Housing Association, but benefits only get you so far and my debts are growing.
I love construction. I just like how you can start from nothing, and then can look back and see a useful, finished product. It is a satisfying achievement for yourself and the customers. I have previously worked mainly in plastering, but I am keen to build a more stable career. The electrician training will get me a good foot into the industry again.
I wish I had an opportunity like this years ago - I feel like I was always either too young, too old or not on time. Now I am grabbing this opportunity! My family and my kids are my biggest motivation. I want us to be able to live like a family again. I want a debt-free life for us and to be productive again.
Uriah is working with Beam because he was recently homeless and is at risk of homelessness.
