Reducing wait times for ADHD and autism assessments at Your Healthcare

Average waiting times for ADHD and autism assessments reached around 2 years, so Your Healthcare trialled Notes to reduce admin and speed up the assessment process.

Across the UK, demand for ADHD and autism assessments is rising faster than services can keep up.

In June 2025, around 236,225 people were waiting for an autism assessment, and 549,000 people were waiting for an ADHD assessment. Behind these numbers are real people, many struggling with their mental health, work, education, and daily life while they wait for answers and support.

Clinicians at Your Healthcare felt this pressure. Assessments are detailed and documentation-heavy, and teams were already managing high caseloads.

To tackle the 2-year waiting list, Your Healthcare piloted Notes to help their team spend less time on paperwork and more time on patient care.

The challenge

Too much admin, not enough time

On average, an ADHD or autism report took around 6 hours to complete. That meant practitioners were spending significant amounts of time writing up clinical notes, gathering evidence for assessments, and drafting reports. This was reducing the time they had available to directly support patients.

Long waiting times for diagnosis

Demand for ADHD and autism assessments kept rising, but practitioners could only complete a limited number of assessments each week, creating bottlenecks and pushing waiting times for diagnosis to around 2 years.

The approach

The 8-week pilot involved 28 clinicians. They used Notes during sessions to capture conversations, reducing the need to write up notes afterwards.

Clinicians also used Reports to upload existing documents and automatically generate structured assessment report drafts. These drafts were then mapped directly into standard templates for ADHD assessments, autism assessments, and strategy meetings.

While Beam’s tools assisted with documentation, it did not provide diagnoses. Instead, it supported clinicians with the structured data they needed to make informed clinical decisions.

The impact

Assessment reports completed 2.8x faster

Clinical documentation was completed 45% faster, with the biggest time savings coming from writing ADHD and autism reports.

Time spent writing assessment reports fell by 63%, saving practitioners around 3 hours 47 minutes per assessment. Across the 8-week pilot, that added up to 616 hours saved.

This gave clinicians breathing room. Deadlines felt more manageable and workloads were easier to stay on top of.

More present with patients

Clinicians reported a 44% improvement in the quality of conversations. Without needing to take notes, clinicians could observe nonverbal cues and be more present with their patients. This made a real impact in ADHD and autism assessments that require careful observation and listening.

Better quality notes

Clinicians reported a 62% improvement in the quality of written records. Nurses in particular noted that the level of detail captured in their notes improved dramatically. The average score improved by 79%, increasing from 4.5 to 8/10.

Improved mental health for practitioners

Before the pilot, 65% said admin was negatively affecting their wellbeing, but that number dropped to 19% after the pilot.

With less time spent on paperwork, clinicians could focus on patients again, and on the part of the job that they loved.
