Having somebody there to talk to and to support you - it can change your whole perspective. I’ve had hard times and not known who I could turn to. That's why I want to find a job in social work. I'd like to help others in the same position.
I moved to the UK after an awful event made it unsafe for me to stay in Jamaica. I stayed with relatives at first but after my daughter was born there was not enough room. Without the right residence permit, I wasn't allowed to work or claim housing benefit. So I was moved to a hostel when my baby was just 8 months old. This was very difficult. It was not a suitable place to live with a child.
It was a relief to have my residency granted last year and to move into a flat. I'm determined to be independent again. I've started work in a supermarket but my ambitions are bigger. I will never stop seeking ways to better myself and help my daughter. This course will let me become a family support worker. I want to learn and get as much experience as possible. In the future, I can continue studying to reach my goal of becoming an independent social worker. To give something back is really important to me. I want to share my success with others.Show More

Too often homeless people are forced to lie out of sheer desperation. We think it's better when relationships are built on trust and honesty. Beam verifies each member in 4 ways:
1. Referral: every member of Beam is referred by a registered homelessness charity or local authority.
2. Interviews: before their campaign launches, each member is interviewed twice by a Beam Member Manager.
3. References: we take references on each member from the charity who refers them and someone in a position of responsibility.
4. Profile: we take great care to verify information in a member's story is true.
It's your money.
We work hard to ensure that you can give confidently.
A caseworker or "Member Manager" is an employee of Beam who helps those referred to Beam to plan a crowdfunding campaign and supports them through training and into work.
All Member Managers are trained professionals who specialise in supporting vulnerable adults by focusing on their strengths and abilities.
