I want to look back on my life and say “I’m not the person I used to be”. I will be able to sleep well at night without any stress because I’ve created a new, stable life. I’ll be so proud to say “I’ve become someone and I’m earning an honourable living.”
I haven’t had a home since 2014. But it was a few years before when I started going down the wrong road. I was sold a dream but it was all based on a fantasy. I started selling drugs but got caught. 14 months later, I was released from prison with nowhere to stay. I was directed to night shelters but didn’t go and instead started staying with friends. During that time, I went back to prison again.
This year, I decided it was time for me to change. I realised I had nothing. I re-engaged with my Youth & Community worker who I first met when I was 16 years old and he has really helped me. I went to the council and I'm getting support with my housing. Next up, I need to sort myself with a job! I’ve never worked and didn’t know where to start, but at least by having a trade that’s a skill that I’ll always be able to turn to. I started googling what I could do and thought plumbing would suit me.
Now Beam is helping me change my life. In less than 4 weeks, they’ve already helped me do a free construction course and I’m enrolled onto my Level 2 Plumbing course starting in October. My end goal is to be a Gas Safety Engineer but being a professional plumber is the first place to start. To just be driving around in the van, helping people fix things in their houses will be normal.
Wherever I end up living, I want to be able to afford things to make it a really nice home. I want all this so I am able to support my daughters. They are growing up so fast. It’s not about me anymore.
