I like it when good things come my way. I know that sometimes they don't, this is the way life is, but when they do it puts a smile on my face.
My son and I became homeless when I brought him over from Africa to live with me. I was staying at a cousin's house, but we were asked to leave because the house had become overcrowded. At that point I approached Southwark Council and asked for support with housing. They placed us in temporary accommodation at the start of the year and we've been here ever since.
Not having a permanent place to live is stressful by itself. What makes it worse is that my son's school is over one and a half hours' away. If the traffic is bad, sometime's it's two hours! This has really put a strain on both of us. I have been working as a security guard for 12 years and I work night shifts so that I can look after my son before and after school. I usually finish around half six in the morning, and it would make life so much easier if we lived less than an hour away from his school. I'd be able to take him to school quickly and get back home to rest and take care of other things.
I'm working with Beam to get my own place where I can create a more stable and organised life for us both. This will create a really positive change for us.
