I’d been living with my children and partner in a small flat for years. Then in 2016 the changes to benefits hit us. To make matters worse my husband developed back problems and had to get signed off sick from his job as a bus driver. We began to struggle to pay the rent. Currently I’m working with St Mungo’s to avoid being evicted by the council. But I know the best solution long-term is to move into full-time paid work.
I’ve volunteered in nurseries before. I love the job as I’ve had a lot of practise raising kids and know this is something I can succeed at - helping other mums and also making sure I can be at home to look after mine outside working hours. All the feedback I’ve received at work has been really positive and 2 nurseries have already offered me a placement so I can complete my diploma.
I do a lot of community work currently - my good level of English allows me to volunteer and help those who need it with translation. Longer term I’d love to open my own nursery and even have a good venue in mind! But first, with your help, I need to get the right qualifications and experience.
